The Waterfront Pergola Legacy

Home/Community Stories/The Waterfront Pergola Legacy

When I think about what kind of legacy I want to leave behind I think of my family first. I think about the values I have passed on and how much joy or love I’ve given them. I think about how they will remember me when I’m gone.

I hope to leave them memories of a life well-lived. A life lived from the heart, honest and open, with love, compassion and kindness, in service to myself and others. A lofty goal, but with the power of my actions to live what I value I just might inspire my family to leave the world in a better place than when I entered it.

I want them to remember me as someone who cared for the city I lived in and wanted to make it a better place.

The Waterfront Pergola in Community Waterfront Park was created to recognize our values, those who aspired to do, and be better for themselves and others. The Civic Plaza was created to provide a place to gather and to celebrate inspiring individuals, and our whole community. The Pergola has over 600 leaves of inspiration engraved with the name of an individual, families, or a not-for-profit organization that makes or has made a difference in someone’s life.

Many of these 650+ leaves come with a story. They are listed on and there is room for many more leaves on the Pergola. Go to the website to find out more about how you can honour someone who has inspired you.
